PalumaPaluma is only 90 minutes from Townsville, but it feels like a whole world away. It's nestled 3,000 feet above sea level amongst stunning world heritage rainforest.
One of its most charming spots has to be Ivy Cottage. The doors to Ivy Cottage opened in the sixties and it's been serving delicious home made cakes, pastries and teas ever since amongst it's resident birdlife.
But the birds aren't the only characters in the village of 30 full time residents. Len Cook came to Paluma 26 years ago and brought his passion for pottery with him.
Len sells a range of pottery exclusively from his studio. He has won several awards and is shown in several regional galleries in Queensland. Len's studio is open 9 - 5:30pm, 7 days a week.
Hidden Valley Cabins sits on the western slope of the Paluma Range, about a 90 minute drive from Townsville, and only a stone's throw from some of the region's most beautiful sites. It's a good base to explore the area.
There are six comfortable cabins, each with an ensuite. There's also a fully licensed restaurant, swimming pool and games area. If you want to explore the surrounding wilderness, you can with Hidden Valley Tours. It offers three day Rainforest to Outback Safaris that get you well off the beaten track.
The tour visits locations such as Running River Gorge, Birthday Creek Falls, the world heritage listed rainforests around Paluma and Wallamun Falls, which has the biggest vertical drop in Australia.
They depart from Townsville twice a week. All meals and accommodation for two nights in Hidden Valley Cabins are included in the price.
