Giru Barra Fishing It’s only about a 60 kilometre drive south from Townsville to the little sugar cane town of Giru, and it’s definitely worth the trip. It’s a tiny place for sure, but the 600 residents have a lot to be proud of. It was voted the friendliest town in North Queensland, and it’s won the spirit of the bush award.
Giru is on the Haughton River, and its estuaries are absolutely teeming with giant Barramundi. Andrew Mead who runs Aussie Barra Charters has about 15 years experience in the area, and his charter operation is a full day experience that includes the ice, gear and tackle, bait and all the permits.
Andrew also targets Fingermark, Grunter, Mangrove Jack and Spanish Mackerel in different spots in the Townsville area.
A day out fishing with Andrew and Aussie Barra Charters in the Townsville area costs $180 per person and that includes a pick up from your hotel in Townsville.
And don’t forget, if you’re visiting Giru, stop in and say hi to the guys at the Giru International Hotel where you can grab a great meal and a few drinks, and the accommodation starts at $20 a night.
